THERE is a need for education at every level, in order to tackle youth unemployment issues in Brunei, said a panelist yesterday, during the Local Business Development (LBD) forum.

Dato Paduka Dr Hj Zulkarnain Hj Hanafi, Permanent Secretary of Higher Education at the Ministry of Education cum Vice Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam, was speaking during the “Local Employment” focus session, as part of the LBD forum at Energy Week 2014.

The permanent secretary said that it was the responsibility of everyone – including the older generation – to be involved, in order to nurture and sustain the next generation.

“Everyone seems to speak about who’s responsible to develop kids and everyone says it’s education.

“However, we cannot just say it’s the government’s duty to provide this education. In the real world, education is provided by everyone – it’s everyone’s business,” Dato Paduka Dr Hj Zulkarnain said.

The permanent secretary said that there is a need for everyone to take responsibility to avoid producing “kangaroo children” – youth who are holders of bachelor’s and master’s degrees, but who refuse to leave home for lower-level jobs.

“We have to be very clear about job expectations and paint a nice career for path for (the youth), what kind of future there will be for them if they engage in jobs such as these,” he said.

He added that companies must also have means of retaining them, and allowing them to progress in those jobs.

“We have to remember that different people will learn differently, and that some people are not as academically inclined as others.

“To understand and to know that people are different, and that there is not just one way of educating them is a challenge, but is something we have to do, and take responsibility for,” he further said.

Meanwhile, Hajah Zainab M. A. Omar, HR Manager at Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd, said that there was a need to instill a “hunger and excitement in students to be successful” at our school level.

She also spoke about the significance of succession planning and non-tangible retention, with regards to overcoming employee retention issues.

“People often tend to overlook non-tangible retention, and ‘hygiene factors’ in the organisation. We have to talk about things like how conducive the working environment is, about things like flexitime, for example,” Hjh Zainab stated.

According to Hjh Zainab, these intangible factors would have long-term impacts, as the happiness levels of employees – directly or indirectly – would affect productivity levels.

“Monetary factors have very short-term impacts. Satisfied employees who are happy will result in long-term investment impacts,” she said.

At the beginning of the focus session, Dr Hajah May Fa’ezah Hj A. Ariffin, Director General at the Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE) reported that there were 14,461 locals who were unemployed in the Sultanate, according to unemployment data in January 2014.

About 12,000 of them were in the youth category, between 18 to 39 years old, she reported.

Minister of Energy, Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Mohd Yasmin Hj Umar was also present at the session.

ABOUT 70 people have registered so far for the various apprenticeship and diploma programmes offered by the Brunei Maritime Academy (BMA) at Energy Week 2014.

BMA Project Director II Norjemee Jenek told The Brunei Times yesterday that the response was “a bit slow”, though he said people who visited BMA’s booth at BRIDEX Exhibition Hall 1 had shown enthusiasm and curiosity about the programmes on offer.

“I think they like this idea of a challenging job; they like to be adventurous and some of them are genuinely interested about joining,” he said.

“They ask a lot of questions... such as (about) job expectations and job benefits.”

According to real-time statistics displayed yesterday at the booth, 56 males and 14 females have registered with the BMA.

“The apprenticeship programmes in Deck Rating and Engine Rating are the most popular, from what I can see,” Norjemee said.

Some 31 people registered for the apprenticeship in Deck Rating, followed by the Diploma Programme in Marine Engineering with 18 people, the statistics showed.

Norjemee explained that the requirements for these programmes were lower, compared to the diploma programmes.

“Also, most of the time, people are looking for the quickest and easiest pathway to securing a job,” he said, adding that the apprenticeship programmes run for about nine months.

However, Norjemee said that these programmes were career development pathways.

“If you take the usual academic pathway, you would have to attain educational qualifications in order to develop (your career), but for this, you don’t need to excel academically as it’s the experience attained on the job that helps you to develop your career further,” he pointed out.

The project director said that all applications received at Energy Week 2014 were for the July intake, as registration for the pioneering April intake closed in February.

Expected to commence at the end of next month, the April intake were going through the “interviewing” process.


BMA aims to produce local maritime professionals, as well as trained and certified seafarers, in accordance to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) standard. The new academy will be under the purview of the Ministry of Education, and driven by the Energy Department at the Prime Minister’s Office (EDPMO), with support from the Ministry of Communications.

Interested potential students who have yet to register were urged to visit the BMA booth at the BRIDEX Exhibition Hall 1 for more information, while Energy Week 2014 runs till Saturday, March 29.

BRUNEI aims to increase its share of renewable energy in the total power generation mix by 10 percent or 954,000 MWh by 2035.

This is more than sufficient to meet Brunei’s demand. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Brunei National Energy research Institute (BNERI), Dr Weerawat Chantakome said Brunei needs to diversify its energy mix and not only focus on oil and gas as its main source of energy.

The CEO referred to the focus on oil and gas as ‘not a good way to go’.

Brunei currently produces about 1, 7000 MWh of solar energy per year.

Dr Weerawat said this in an interview with The Brunei Times on the sidelines of the first Joint Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA)- Brunei National Energy Research Institute (BNERI) Special Seminar on “Energy Market Integration and Deployment of Renewable Power Technologies”.

Brunei had used fossil fuel for a long time. Renewable energy for Brunei is still in its early stages.

A lot of things need to be done to move renewable energy into reality, he said.

BNERI shall recommend and accelerate the energy strategies by providing policy research, information, expertise and capacity building to ensure that, over the long-term, necessary energy development policies and programs are in action and harmony with the economic growth and the environmental sustainability of Brunei under National Vision 2035 and the region.

The Energy White Paper launched last Monday (March 24) said renewable energy is one of the four areas of BNERI priorities.

These priorities include: 1) Energy efficiency and conservation, 2) Renewable energy, 3) Power and 4) Oil and gas.

“Energy efficiency and conservation is a high priority because this is a low hanging fruit activity that we can do now,” Dr Weerawat said.

“From it, we can see ‘return of income’ and there is no harm for the environment. The thing that we have to do now is create awareness,” he added.

On Tuesday (March 25), a Youth Energy Dialogue was organised as part of the Energy Week 2014 between the Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office, Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia Hj Mohammad Yasmin Hj Umar and 300 youths.

The focus was increasing awareness of youth on their roles and the importance of their aspirations, initiatives and actions in shaping the future of the energy sector.

In the aspect of power, Dr Weerawat said under BNERI, they will calculate and assess on how Brunei will reduce incidences of blackouts. This is a big job, now we are working on that, he said.

The Energy White Paper states that this does not include scheduled power outages for maintenance purposes.

The target is to reduce frequency of power outages to less than 100 per year by 2017 and to less than 50 per year by 2035.

BNERI will also assist in doubling the production of oil and gas from 408,000 (barrels per day) in 2010 to 650,000 barrels per day in 2035.

To achieve all this, it will require investments, expertise, technology and government support, he said.

With BNERI ready to push ahead on its second year, it plans to recruit 10-15 researchers in the next two years.

Dr Weerawat targeted that they will be able to recruit five to 10 researchers this year, and another five researchers in 2015.

He said the number may not be huge but it was important to have quality researchers and have them establish networks with overseas experts.

BNERI aspires to become an international centre of excellence on energy that will have a significant contribution towards Brunei National Vision 2035.

Permanent Secretary (Downstream & Power), Energy Department at Prime Minister’s Office, Dato Paduka Hj Jamain Hj Julaihi, opened the seminar yesterday.

“All countries today are searching for appropriate renewable energies as part of their energy mix. The topic of this seminar today came timely to explore ways forward with some solutions through expertise and experience sharing from our guest speakers and audiences.

The seminar featured Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia’s Special Advisor on Energy Affairs, Shigeru Kimura, as well as tow of ERIA’s energy economists Dr Yanfei Li and Dr Venkatachalam Anbumozhi.

The speakers presented and discussed experiences and lessons-learned in promoting the deployment of renewable energy technologies in East Asia under different stages of energy market development.

HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday said he was pleased to see more locals joining the oil and gas industry.

After launching the Energy Week 2014 at BRIDEX International Conference Centre, Hall 2, Jerudong, the monarch said it was a “very good” sight to see, after speaking to hundreds of Bruneians explaining their roles in contributing to the economy.

His Majesty, who launched the Energy White Paper and Oil and Gas book, later toured both exhibition halls to meet the players in the industry, as well as viewed initiatives by the Energy Department at the Prime Minister’s Office (EDPMO) and other agencies to create more jobs.

“The exhibition was very well-established, and I would like to congratulate the Energy Department, His Majesty told The Brunei Times prior to completing the tour.

Throughout the Sultan’s visit, all one could see was a big smile on his face as he interacted with not only industry players, but also mingled with students from various energy clubs. His Majesty even tested one of Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP)’s bicycles.

The static bicycle was meant for demonstration purposes to show the monarch how humans could generate power just by cycling.

All eyes and sounds of cheer were directed toward His Majesty when he agreed to give it a try and cycle for about a minute.

This year’s theme for the Energy Week is “Sustainable energy for Brunei Darussalam’s prosperity”.

The Energy White Paper was designed to support Brunei’s Vision 2035, promote career, employment and business opportunities in the energy industry.

It also sets out the targets the oil and gas industry have to meet by 2035, including hiring more Bruneians.

The Brunei Darussalam Oil and Gas Book, on the other hand, is a publication on the role models who encourage more Bruneians to tap into the energy sector. Apart from sharing their experiences, their main call is for youth to join them in contributing to the country’s development.

Jobseekers are encouraged to visit the Energy Week until Saturday, to gain more insight into potential careers. The EDPMO is looking to recruit more than 1,000 individuals at the oil and gas job fair.

Those looking for a job and register at the EDPMO booth, will be able to obtain a copy of the oil and gas book, as well as the chance to interact with the role models in Hall 1.

Over the week, a series of conferences, meetings, a forum and a youth dialogue will take place. The energy exhibition and oil and gas job fair will run concurrently.

THE Energy White Paper was lauded by the education minister yesterday as a positive means for the education ministry to align its efforts with the needs of the oil and gas industry.

Speaking to The Brunei Times at the opening of Energy Week 2014 yesterday, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Awg Abu Bakar Hj Apong said that the Ministry of Education (MoE) has been working closely with the Energy Department at the Prime Minister’s Office (EDPMO) on a wide range of initiatives to produce a highly skilled quality workforce that is industry ready and industry compliant.

The Energy Industry Competency Framework (EICF) is one initiative that MoE and EDPMO have been working closely together on since last year and “this collaboration has proven to be successful with a number of students signed up in technical education courses,” said the minister.

“The beauty of this programme is that we are working very closely with the industry so that those students who have been identified are guaranteed jobs once they have completed their programmes,’’ he added. Asked how soon these recruits can be integrated into the workforce, YB Pehin Dato (Dr) Hj Awg Abu Bakar said: “These recruits have been on the programmes since last September, so depending on the kind of programme selected such as the Industry Skilled Qualification (ISQ), it will take about a year before working in the industry.

“If they are in the HNTEC (Higher National Certificate Qualification), it will take about one year with the industry for attachment, which means they will begin working in two years time.’’

The earliest of those to complete the programme would be the ISQ students, added the education minister.

Speaking of future collaborations with the EDPMO, YB Pehin Dato (Dr) Hj Awg Abu Bakar said a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with the Singapore Maritime Academy last month to help establish the Brunei Maritime Academy (BMA) - a joint effort between the Energy Department, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Communications - so the next step would be to kick the initiative into high gear and get it started.

The BMA is set to receive its first batch of students next month. The minister ensured that joint efforts between the ministry of education and the energy department will not come to a halt anytime soon.

“We are looking forward to expand to other areas and try to develop (momentum) with the Energy Department,’’ he said.

Energy White Paper: Attracting investments fundamental

THE government will evaluate four main ideas in attracting investors into the country as Brunei seeks to achieve its target of $70 to $80 billion in cumulative investment from 2011 to 2035, according to the Energy White Paper.

The white paper, which maps out targets for Brunei’s oil and gas industry and launched yesterday, states that attracting investments is an essential pillar to growing the country’s energy sector.

“In order to achieve its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) target, we anticipate that Brunei Darussalam needs to attract approximately $70 to $80 billion in cumulative investment from 2011 to 2035,” the publication stated.

The figures translate into an average annual investment level of about $3 to $4 billion in the next two decades, “more than twice the recent investment level“, it said.

Based on the successful best practices in investment attraction, the government will evaluate four main ideas.

First, building a strong and competent team of investment officers to approach “high priority investors.”

These investment officers will assess which are the key investors, proactively pitch deals and build and manage the relationship with the client.

The second approach will be designing customised value propositions to pitch investors.

Through this method, the white paper explained, investment officers will utilise investment pitch books customised to the business and priorities of the investor and this step ensures a synergistic fit between the environment requirements and needs of the investor.

Meanwhile, the remaining two initiatives will focus on providing key supporting enablers.

This includes investing strategically in key supporting infrastructure and providing incentives to attract world class investors, particularly in the downstream industry as Brunei aspires to move from being largely an upstream exporter to a “sophisticated downstream player of scale.”

“This would continue Brunei’s tradition of building infrastructure of significant scale and surrounding facilities, such as the world-class petrochemical hub SPARK (Sungai Liang Industrial Park) and Telisai-Lumut Highway, will allow investors to set up and ramp up operations quickly,” the white paper stated.

“The government also plans to strategically provide incentives to investors in priority industries such as strategic income tax reliefs and agreements,” it added.

The last initiative would be to create a business friendly environment and a cosmopolitan society to attract foreign talents to live and work in Brunei.

To achieve this, the government could explore options to improve the ease of doing business and develop a social eco-system that embraces the diverse needs of foreign investor personnel, the white paper explains.

“This is beneficial not only to the energy sector but also Brunei’s economy, and would require coordinated efforts from various government entities and members of the industry,” it added.

While noting that doubling the average annual investment level is a challenging task as it requires an average investment growth rate of six to seven per cent for a 20-year time frame, the government acknowledges that there are several countries around the world which have achieved high investment growth rates over a long period of time.

According to the white paper, Singapore, South Africa and Costa Rice, for example, have managed to achieve annual investment growth rate of five to seven per cent in the previous two decades.

“Similarly in Qatar, the government has actively sought to promote international investment in core sectors such as energy. This has helped it increase the share of foreign direct investment to total GDP from 1 per cent to in 2000 to 3.5 per cent to 2011.

“The government is fully dedicated to provide the necessary support including capital, infrastructure, business environment and regulatory reform to attract and sustain investment in priority areas of the economy and harness synergistic effects from these projects,” the white paper stated.

NEARLY 700 people registered during the first day of the career and job fair at Energy Week 2014, which opened yesterday.

From the 695 people who registered electronically at the fair held at the BRIDEX Hall 1, 452 were male and the rest female.

A total of 1,130 vacancies — in administration, aviation, business/ finance, construction, engineering, hospitality/catering, HSSE, human resource, IT, legal, logistics, marine, operations and supply chain — were showcased at the fair.

An official overseeing the registration, Adriana Agusdin told The Brunei Times that the fair aimed at providing better job-matching for jobseekers.

Statistics collected through the job fair will be shared with the Ministry of Education as well as the Energy Department at the Prime Minister’s Office (EDPMO) and relevant ministries, she said.

The annual job fairs began in 2011, with the main objective of promoting local employment opportunities within the country’s oil and gas industry.

The career and job fair will run until March 29, from 9am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday. On Friday, the fair will break for the Friday prayers.

Meanwhile, registrations for the Brunei Maritime Academy, which will commence next month, were also held next to the job fair.

According to statistics provided in the Energy Week 2014 programme book, recruitment of locals have surpassed targets, since the first job fair in 2011.

Some 3,894 locals were recruited by the end of 2012, when the target was set 3,600.

Meanwhile, from November 2013 up to March 2014, there have been 447 recruitments, with a target of 3,000 recruitments by the end of this year.

Several jobseekers also shared their thoughts on the job fair.

For Mohd Noor Andry Shah Sarugi, the fair was an opportunity for him to find the best career prospect. The 23-year-old graduated in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School in 2012.

Mohd Noor Andry currently works as a technician in a computer shop.

“I want to try my luck in the industry, because I refuse to stay in one place,” he said.

Mohd Noor Andry was with his colleague Muhd Nazirul Haqq Baha.

“We started from small, with baby steps, (and) gained experience and (will) use our knowledge and experience to drive us further,” he said.

Muhd Nazirul has been working at the computer shop for one year and five months. The 19-year-old is waiting for his final results in International Diploma in Computer Studies (IDIS) at the Kemuda Institute.

Commenting on working while studying, Muhd Nazirul stressed the importance of time management.

It was hard at first but he managed to cope over time, he shared.

He advised others to make the best of the opportunities that they had.

BRUNEI has discovered potentially vast reserves of oil and gas in the South China Sea that are double current key performance indicators (KPIs), said the Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office yesterday.

Existing plans, together with new findings from offshore blocks, are expected to deliver 3.5 billion barrels of oil by 2035, it was revealed in the Energy White Paper released yesterday at the launch of “Energy Week.”

 “Last year we had a very good discovery. In fact, our discovery exploration result is double than our KPI within the present acreage area (of Brunei’s exclusive economic zone),” said Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Mohammad Yasmin Hj Umar.

 The minister told The Brunei Times that the government plans to increase drilling activity in the coming years to surpass the current production rate of 372,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (BOEPD). The split is approximately 40 per cent oil to 60 per cent gas.

 The Energy Department at the Prime Minister’s Office (EDPMO) is targeting a production rate of 430,000 BOEPD by 2017, and 650,000 BOEPD by 2035.

 YB Pehin Dato (Dr) Hj Mohd Yasmin said he was confident the country could recover from a 7.7 per cent decline in oil and gas production in 2013, which was due to ongoing maintenance at the oil refinery and offshore platforms.

 Due to the drop in energy output, the economy is expected to register negative growth of 1.4 per cent at the end of the financial year on March 31, compared to 0.9 per cent growth in 2012. “We are doing a lot of rejuvenating of the offshore platforms. The process is going on, but give it another year or two years and we’ll be back,” he said, explaining that some of the facilities were over 40 years old and well overdue for maintenance.

 In order for the national economy to reach the six per cent per annum growth target prescribed under Vision 2035, the energy sector must increase GDP output from $10 billion to $42 billion by 2035.

“We can (achieve the target),” said YB Pehin Dato (Dr) Hj Mohd Yasmin. “It’s difficult at the moment but we can.”

 According to the Energy White Paper, the two major energy companies awarded offshore concessions have developed “significant exploration plans.”

Brunei must maintain an oil and gas reserve replacement ratio (RRR) of more than one to meet growth targets.

The RRR has been in the range of 0.3 to 0.7 in the past decade but has climbed above one in the past five years.

Sempena Majlis Perasmian Minggu Tenaga akan diselajurkan dengan Pelancaran Kertas Putih Tenaga Negara Brunei Darussalam dan Buku Terbitan Khas bertajuk ‘You Can Make a Difference Brunei Oil and Gas: Where Opportunities Await You’.

Menurut Siaran Akhbar yang dikeluarkan oleh Jabatan Tenaga di JPM antara objektif-objektif utama Minggu Tenaga 2014 adalah Membarigakan Kertas Putih Tenaga Brunei Darussalam dalam mendukung Wawasan Brunei 2035; meningkatkan kesedaran masyarakat akan pentingnya sumber tenaga dan keperluan berjimat di dalam penggunaan sumber berkenaan; membarigakan kerjaya dan peluang-peluang pekerjaan di dalam industri tenaga (termasuk maritim) dan juga peluang perniagaan; mempertengahkan penglibatan para penuntut dan belia di dalam industri tenaga dan mempertengahkan individu teladan (role model) yang dimuatkan di dalam buku terbitan khas ‘Brunei Oil and Gas: You Can Make A Difference Where Opportunities Await You’ untuk berinteraksi dengan orang awam khususnya penuntut-penuntut dan belia-belia.

Di samping itu pelbagai aktiviti akan diadakan bersempena Minggu Tenaga 2014 termasuk Sembahyang Fardu Maghrib dan Isyak Berjemaah, Membaca Surah Yaa Siin dan Doa Selamat yang akan diadakan di Masjid Ash-Shaliheen pada 23 Mac 2014.

Forum akan memfokuskan isu-isu dan perkembangan terkini di dalam peluang-peluang perniagaan, teknologi, peraturan-peraturan dan inisiatif-inisiatif perniagaan dan Dialog Belia Mengenai Tenaga (Youth Energy Dialogue yang akan diadakan pada 25 Mac 2014 dengan membukakan peluang bagi para belia untuk berbincang dengan Yang Berhormat Menteri Tenaga di JPM dalam hal-hal yang berkaitan dengan tenaga. Dialog ini diharapkan akan dapat mencungkil idea-idea baru dari para belia dan memberikan peluang bagi mereka melahirkan harapan dan impian bagi masa hadapan.

Satu Pameran Tenaga (Energy Exhibition) juga akan diadakan di Dewan 2 BRIDEX dari 24 hingga 29 Mac 2014. Para pengunjung akan berpeluang untuk melawat Pavilion Jabatan Tenaga di JPM, Pameran Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EEC) & Renewable Energy (RE), Pameran Health Safety Security Environment (HSSE), Pavilion BNERI dan juga ruang-ruang pameran oleh agensi-agensi kerajaan, syarikat-syarikat minyak & gas utama, syarikat-syarikat tempatan dan antarabangsa, badan-badan bukan Kerajaan (NGOs) dan para pelajar melalui Kelab Tenaga. Juga akan dipamerkan adalah kereta mesra alam dan kereta EcoMarathon.

Selain daripada itu, para pengunjung juga akan berpeluang untuk menyaksikan pameran dan membeli peralatan-peralatan elektrik yang jimat tenaga. Lebih 70 penyertaan daripada peserta tempatan dan luar negara akan menyertai Pameran Tenaga.

Pameran-pameran ini akan menampilkan pelbagai jenis kursus dan latihan kemahiran di dalam bidang-bidang yang berkaitan dengan industri tenaga dan industri perkhidmatan tenaga dan akan berpeluang untuk memperolehi maklumat mengenai dengan peluang-peluang pekerjaan di dalam bidang-bidang teknikal dan bukan teknikal. Lebih 60 syarikat dari industri minyak dan gas dan industri perkhidmatan akan menyertai Pesta Kerja dan Kerjaya ini nanti. Kaunter-kaunter e-Pendaftaran akan disediakan bagi menerima pendaftaran daripada para pengunjung yang sedang mencari pekerjaan atau yang ingin mengikuti program-program latihan di bawah EICF.

Pameran-pameran juga dibukakan bagi kunjungan orang ramai bermula dari Isnin, 24 hingga Sabtu, 29 Mac, bermula dari pukul 9.00 pagi hingga 6.00 petang kecuali pada hari Jumaat, yang mana waktu dibuka adalah pada pukul 9.00 hingga 11.30 pagi dan 2.30 hingga 6.00 petang. ENERGY Week 2014 opens next week March 24 at the BRIDEX Exhibition Centre, the Energy Department at the Prime Minister’s Office announced yesterday.

Carrying the theme ‘Sustainable Energy for Brunei Darussalam Prosperity’, Energy Week 2014 aims to promote awareness among the community about the importance of energy sources, and the need to conserve them.

The event also aims to showcase career and employment opportunities in the energy industry (including maritime), as well as business opportunities.

One of the highlights of the event will be the launch of the Brunei Darussalam Energy White Paper, as well as the book titled 'You Can Make A Difference (Brunei Oil and Gas: Where Opportunities Await You)".

The event also aims to promote the involvement of students and youth in the energy industry, and to highlight exemplary individuals featured in the published book, and to allow them to interact with the public, particularly with students and youth.

Among the activities lined up for Energy Week 2014 is the Brunei National Energy Research Institute (BNERI) Conference, which will be taking place on March 25 at the Jerudong Polo Club.

The conference will discuss current issues facing the global energy industry.

Invited international energy experts representing International Energy Agency (IEA), International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) and World Economic Forum (WEF) are expected to speak at the conference.

The Youth Energy Dialogue will also take place on March 25, where youth will be provided the opportunity to discuss energy-related matters with the Minister of Energy at the PMO.

Meanwhile, issues on the latest developments in business opportunities, technology, regulations and business initiatives will be discussed during the Local Business Development Forum, on March 26.

Visitors will be able to visit a number of exhibitions throughout Energy Week 2014 (March 24 to March 29), including the ‘Energy Exhibition’ at BRIDEX Hall 2, which consists over 70 booths manned by government agencies, oil and gas companies (local and international), non-government organisations, as well as students.

At the Energy Exhibition, visitors will also be able to purchase energy-saving electrical appliances, and see an environmentally-friendly car, as well an EcoMarathon car.

Meanwhile, the Energy Industry Competency Exhibition, Brunei Maritime Academy Exhibition, as well as a Energy Sector job and career fair, will be taking place in BRIDEX Hall .

Exhibits here will feature a variety of courses and skill training programmes which are relevant to the energy industry, and the energy service industry.

Over 60 oil and gas industry companies will be participating in the job and career fair.

The exhibitions will be open to the public from 9am to 6pm from Monday to Saturday next week.

The exhibition opening hours on Friday, however will be from 9am until 11.30am, and then from 2.30pm until 6pm. – Amanda Yap

THE first-ever Energy Exhibition 2014 — showcasing new energy-related technologies, products and appliances organised by the Energy Department at the Prime Minister’s Office (EDPMO) — will be held from March 24 to 29.

With the theme, ‘Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EEC)’, the Energy Exhibition 2014 will act as an awareness programme by EDPMO that aims to educate and encourage members of the public to conserve energy for a sustainable future.

According to the EDPMO’s website, the exhibition will feature relevant government agencies, major oil and gas operators, international and local vendors, non-governmental organisations, and those from the transport sector such as car dealers that have hybrid models.

The Energy Exhibition 2014 will also be used as a platform for Energy Club students to present their findings on the effectiveness of an inverter air conditioner as an energy-saving appliance.

The Energy Club students are from the Science, Technology and Environment Partnership (STEP) Centre of the Ministry of Education. Through their study, the students will determine the best temperature setting for the air conditioners in each school.

In supporting Brunei’s Vision 2035, the Energy Exhibition 2014 is expected to help international companies to explore business opportunities that will produce a dynamic and sustainable economy.

As the first exhibition of its kind, it also hoped to educate and encourage people to make a change, by switching to affordable, energy-efficient products.

To be held at BRIDEX Exhibition Hall 2, the Energy Exhibtion 2014 will take place simultaneously with the EDPMO’s Energy Week. The launching of the Energy White Paper (EWP) and the Brunei National Energy Research Institute (BNERI) will also take place at the start of the Energy Week.

Bandar Seri Begawan: Brunei Maritime Academy (BMA) held a briefing session yesterday for the 62 potential students on the courses offered, working experience and mariners and other job opportunities.

The briefing was given by Cikgu Norjemee binti Abdullah Jenek, BMA Project Director II, followed by Hj Salihin, an officer from Petroleum Officer on his career as a sailor. They also included talks by young employees from Belait Shipping Sdn Bhd and Nautika Sdn Bhd on their experiences.
BMA is a centre of excellence that offers maritime courses to produce mariners and local maritime professionals recognised by the International Maritime Organisation. They offer courses such as COP Deck Rating, COP Engine Rating, Diploma in Marine Engineering, Diploma in Nautical Studies, Bridging Programme for Cook/Stewards and Bridging Programme for Officer Engineering Watch.
New intake usually starts in April and October, depending on the industry demand. Students are recruited by means of apprenticeship model where students are chosen by the shipping companies themselves and will be offered the job if proved to be determined and interested.
Interviews will be held during Energy Week (March 25 until 27) at BRIDEX, Jerudong.
